Edward Hodges Baily
Sculptor : Edward Hodges Baily (10th March 1788 -
22nd May 1867)
Background : Edward was born in Downend in
Bristol.
Notes of Interest: Edward Hodges Baily will be most
remembered for his statue of Nelson at the top of Nelson's column. His name is often misspelled Bailey. Baily's
father was a well known carver of figureheads for ships. William Theed
the Younger was one of Baily's pupils. Money problems forever haunted Baily who declared himself bankrupt in 1831
and again in 1838. Baily is buried in London's famous Highgate Cemetery.
