Nelson Illingworth

Sculptor : Illingworth, Nelson (August 1862 – 26 June 1926)

Background : Nelson Illingwoth was born in Portsmouth, England and emigrated to Sydney, Australia in 1892.

Notes of Interest : Known as a colourful Bohemian, Illingworth was a member of the Dawn and Dusk club "a band of boozy, bar-bumming bards". Included in his circle of friends was Henry Lawson and Hannah Thornburn. Illigworth's death mask of Henry Lawson resides in the Mitchell Library, though there is still debate as to whether it was made before or after Lawson's death. In 1926, as Illingworth was preparing for a Henry Lawson statue competition he suddenly up and died in Harbord, Sydney.
